In Mai 1939 unit emblems were introduced for Inf.Div.(mot.) called "besondere Zeichen". The decision to use identification symbols on vehicles of the Panzerdivisionen, was a result of the Poland-campaign (OKH(BdE)Nr5729/39 geh. AHA/IN6IIIa 1.Nov.1939). They were painted in yellow and must not be larger than 100x100mm. Within the war years it became common practice that Wehrmacht vehicles used unit emblems. Designed by the unit itself they were used after official permission. They were finally legitimated with the order Nr.21 16.Febr.1944 (OKH GenStdH Org.Abt. II/31180/44. The emblems symbolized the geographic origin, technical, historical specialties. Also the commanders had often influence on the emblem as they showed the initials or symbols of his name.
